butch and i have decided that we want to donate to gawad kalinga instead of giving away wedding favors. i’ve noticed that with most wedding favors, they usually just end up gathering dust. my mum keeps wedding/party favors in a shelf at home and i must have only looked at the souvenirs once or twice before they became “invisible” to me. you know how you’re so used to things being there that you end up forgetting they’re there? that’s what i mean. no offense to those who are giving out wedding favors, though.
as a member of singles for christ we participated in fund-raising activities for gawad kalinga (gk). it’s amazing how $1200 can already build a gk house. to think that this is such a small amount compared to the difference it can make to people’s lives. once after an sfc conference i was so inspired about gawad kalinga that i decided to collect still good but unwanted clothes from my workmates and i sold them on ebay. it wasn’t much but i was able to raise $80 for gk
gk is not just about building houses for the poor. it is also about giving people skills to help make them self-sufficient, among other things. for more infomration on gawad kalinga and how to help, click on http://www.gawadkalinga.org/whatisgk.htm.
we’ll be giving away cards to the guests saying that in lieu of souvenirs, we’re donating to gawad kalinga. hopefully some of our guests who are not familiar with gk will be sympathetic to their plight.
